We were asked if we could help our client North Yorkshire Council, with a property that they have been struggling to solve a few issues. This property is a solid brick make up, which caused it to condensate in the winter and summer with the heat and cold meeting.

This made the property damp, it also contributed to its Black spot mould issues, this black spot mould problem is one of the main reasons why we were asked to look at this property. They also wanted to know if we could insulate the property without having to place 62.5mm of plasterboards on the wall, reducing the houses space and making it difficult to refit the fittings, such as kitchens, bathrooms.

Cork Spray Coatings for Thin Coat Wall Insulation

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the conventional materials such as plasterboard to insulate this property, it will certainly work to decrease the amount of heat loss through the property and stop the heat and cold bridging creating moisture build up.

The biggest disadvantages of using plasterboard for social housing companies and councils is that it’s not very sustainable. Being man made and dug out of the ground using heavy machinery, its also getting more and more difficult to get rid of any waste plaster board.

How is Cork spray coatings any different? Well, Cork is ecofriendly, it is made from the waste material left over from after they have made corks for wine bottles. No trees are felled during this process and what happens is, the tree is left for a period of about 9 years where it goes on to absorb more carbon than it did before.

Cork is also sprayed on the walls, it’s a thin coat system meaning that internally its 8mm thick with a plaster finish, this makes for easier install of kitchens and bathrooms. The benefit also means we can spray into areas plasterboard can’t get to, like the inside of a socket box reducing the amount of cold spotting in a property, Cork spray coatings have other benefits including:

  • Reducing heat loss in a property by 35%, therefore reducing heating costs
  • Environmentally Friendly
  • Impervious to salt erosion
  • It forms a barrier between mould spores and their food source effectively starving them. Curing black spot mould for good
  • Accepts plaster with no primer, for decoration.
  • It’s a hypoallergenic and is great for asthma and hay fever sufferers.
  • Has a 25-year warrant
